The Ultimate Primate Safari

This safari is designed with primate lovers in mind. Included are two gorilla treks in Rwanda, one gorilla trek in Uganda, chimp trekking in Queen Elizabeth Park in Uganda as well as a visit to the Jane Goodall Chimp Sanctuary on Ngamba Island. This tour is considered a deluxe tour staying at some of the best places in Rwanda and Uganda and has one internal flight to add to your comfort. You should be in good physical condition to enjoy this adventure.

Virunga Lodge Day 1  You will be met on arrival at airport and transferred to Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. After a short city tour, safari briefing and lunch you depart for Parc National de Volcans. The journey north goes through the beautiful terraced hillsides that characterize much of Rwanda's landscape, gradually climbing to the base of the awesome volcanoes, sometimes with as many as five peaks visible. Day 2
Today is your first of two gorilla treks. Since you may be recuperating from jet lag or adjusting to the altitude, it is recommended that you trek one of the closer gorilla groups. You must be in good physical condition to fully enjoy this adventure. After trekking for 1 to 11/2 hours, you will find these magnificent creatures and spend an hour with them. You will observe them as they observe you. In the afternoon relax at the lodge or visit the local school, community projects or walk to Lake Bulera. O/N: Volcanoes Virunga Lodge (FB).

Day 3 
Today is your second gorilla treks. Tracking the gorillas through the light mountain forest on the slopes of the Virungas is a magical experience. Since there are 7 habituated gorilla groups you can select a different one to visit today. O/N: Volcanoes Virunga Lodge (FB).

Day 4 
Transfer by road to Uganda [Clocks go forward one hour]. Drive to Bwindi through the Switzerland of Africa, with the road winding through many hills and valleys, with distant views of the volcanoes and lakes. Time permitting go for a guided nature walk in the thick forest rich in birds, butterflies and monkeys. Alternatively go for a short stroll around the lodge. O/N: Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge (FB).

Day 5 
Today is your third gorilla trek, walking up steep densely forested hills before finally coming across the gorillas camouflaged in the vegetation. An inspiring moment! Tracking in Bwindi can be more difficult then Rwanda and requires stamina and can often take most of the day. O/N: Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge (FB).

Day 6
Leave for Queen Elizabeth National Park. Either drive via Ishasha, home of the tree climbing lion, roads permitting, or take the alternative route through cultivated expanses. Time permitting, go for an evening game drive O/N: Mweya lodge (FB).

Day 7 
An excursion to Kyambura Gorge nearby to track the fast moving and elusive chimpanzees, one of man's closest relations. The chimp population is quite mobile and viewing is unpredictable but the walk is enchanting. In the afternoon take a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel where the wildlife and a vast array of birds come to drink. O/N: Mweya lodge (FB).

Day 8 
Transfer to Mweya Airstrip in time for your charter flight to Kajansi Airstrip. You will be met at Kanjasi by your driver/guide and be transferred to Entebbe. O/N: Windsor Lake Victoria Hotel (BB).

Day 9 
Transfer to Entebbe pier for the 9:00AM boat transfer to Ngamba Island to view the 1100 AM chimp feeding and ride back to Entebbe by 1300 Hrs, transfer to the hotel. Lunch at the Windsor, Freshen up & relax in day rooms until transfer to the airport for your return flight (B).
