Rwanda – More than Gorillas While you are in Rwanda, you may wish to see some of the other sites available. Below are some sites to include in your itinerary.Visit Butare with its National Musuem and craft shops. Musee National du Rwanda is the centrepiece of Butare, a huge and amazing Belgium-donated architectural treat that houses a wide variety of archaeological and ethnographical displays, and which would rank as one of the best museums in the East African region. Visit Nyungwe National Park. This is the regions single most important area of biodiversity and rated the highest priority for forest conservation in Africa. Nyungwe has recently been granted National Park status. It is of a particular interest for all those who would like to experience a high altitude rainforest, to see other primates than gorillas such as Angolan colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys plus 500-1000 unhabituated chimpanzees. There have been 275 species of birds recorded. Hikers will also love Nyungwe with the nice hiking trails and splendid views. A good physical condition is advisable if you want to enjoy fully the forest. This area is in its infancy for tourism so facilities and services are basic. Akagera National Park is located in the east of Rwanda and suffered during the recent war with poaching and illegal settlements but, in recent years, it has been making a slow recovery. The Akagera Wildlife Lodge has recently been completely remodeled, refurbished and reopened and it is very nice. Grazers can be seen here including waterbuck and reedbuck. Also to be seen are hippos and crocodiles. The park has still a remarkable selection of birdlife with over 500 bird species in its swamps and wetlands along the Akagera River.
